The Feast of St Brigid
UncategorizedWednesday 1st of February is the feast of St Brigid who is the second most famous patron saint of Ireland. It is a local Clare tradition to tie something white on the back door of your home on the eve of her feast day. St Brigid will then bless all these homes. Brigid was a nurse. One day she was helping an old pagan chieftain. She picked rushes from the chieftain’s field and began to weave them into a cross. With this cross she explained the story of Jesus and His crucifixion to the chieftain. He learnt about the love and forgiveness of God. The chieftain repented of his old lifestyle and became a Christian. Since this time Brigid’s cross has become a symbol of her love of God and people. It is believed that any dwelling in which there is a St Brigid’s cross will never burn down. We will make crosses.

English Translation:
I
I’m a boy from the Erne
and I could charm a nice young girl.
I would not ask for her wealth
as I am rich enough myself.
I own Cork, as big as it is,
two sides of the glen, and Tyrone.
And not to repeat myself,
I’m the heir of County Mayo.
II
I will go tomorrow
to make ale in the wood
Without a cot, without a boat,
without a pinch of gruel with me
But leaves of the branches
as bedclothes over my head
And O! good for you!
and you looking across at me.
III
A cowherd, my pet,
I’ve never been accustomed to be
But playing and drinking and (being)
with nice young women on the mountain
Even though I lost my wealth
it’s not as though I lost my senses
And your kiss is no more to me
now than a shoe worn for a year.

UncategorizedHunting the Wren
UncategorizedWe discussed the tradition of “Hunting the Wren” and the importance of keeping old customs alive.
An Post: Handwriting Competition
UncategorizedWe will be taking part in this competition and writing a piece “Life in Ireland in the early 1900’s”.
Life was much different to life today. Ireland was still recovering from the devastating Great Famine. In the early years, there was no electricity, instead gas lamps or candles were used. There were few cars. People walked, travelled by boat or train or used horses for travel. Many people emigrated to America or Britain.
In the 1900’s around 70% of Irish people lived in the countryside. Their lifestyles of the landlords, rich farmers, small farmers and farm labourers varied a lot. In rural Ireland living conditions were bad; no electricity, running water or toilets and damp, dark houses. There were very few machines.
In this time 30% of Irish people lived in towns and cities. Suburbs for the wealthy developed, while the poor lived in tenement houses in the city centre. They were divided into single room flats with no water or toilets. The better off lived in comfortable conditions in suburbs with large houses that had gardens and servants.
Change came slowly.
