An Post: Handwriting Competition
UncategorizedWe will be taking part in this competition and writing a piece “Life in Ireland in the early 1900’s”.
Life was much different to life today. Ireland was still recovering from the devastating Great Famine. In the early years, there was no electricity, instead gas lamps or candles were used. There were few cars. People walked, travelled by boat or train or used horses for travel. Many people emigrated to America or Britain.
In the 1900’s around 70% of Irish people lived in the countryside. Their lifestyles of the landlords, rich farmers, small farmers and farm labourers varied a lot. In rural Ireland living conditions were bad; no electricity, running water or toilets and damp, dark houses. There were very few machines.
In this time 30% of Irish people lived in towns and cities. Suburbs for the wealthy developed, while the poor lived in tenement houses in the city centre. They were divided into single room flats with no water or toilets. The better off lived in comfortable conditions in suburbs with large houses that had gardens and servants.
Change came slowly.
