Lent: Week 1

Uncategorized

Lent will arrive on Ash Wednesday 1st March and end on Easter Sunday 16th April 2017.

It is a time of reflection and preparation where we  can look back on and celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. Many people fast or give up something they love for the weeks of Lent. Maybe we might consider this. Other people take on something new which will help themselves or family members. We will make a conscious effort to say our prayers. Trócaire boxes will be distributed to each family in the coming days.

Thoughts of the day
As we begin Lent this Wednesday, daily we will try and take a few minutes away from our books and copies and talk about the wisdom in these statements.

Monday 27th February:

“To win you must first begin.”
Tuesday 28th February:

“Start as you mean to go on.”
Wednesday 1st March:

Choose to be kind rather than be right and you’ll be right every time.”
Thursday 2nd March:

“Feel good about your achievements.”
Friday 3rd March:

“There are no stupid questions.”

A Mhuire na ngrás

A Mháthair Mhic Dé,

Go gcuire tú

Ar mo leas mé.
Go sábhála tú mé

Ar gach uile olc;

Go sábhála tú mé

Idir anam is chorp.
Go sábhála tú mé

Ar muir is ar tír;

Go sábhála tú mé

Ar leac na bpian.
Garda na n-aingeal

Os mo chionn,

Dia romham

Agus Dia liom.
I

O Mary of Graces and mother of God,

May I tread in the paths that the righteous have trod,

And mayest thou save me from evil’s control,

And mayest thou save me in body and soul.

II

And mayest thou save me by land and by sea,

And mayest thou save me from tortures to be,

May the guard of the angels around me abide,

May God be before me and God at my side.

III

O Mary of Graces, oh answer my plea

Under crosses in trials, to thee do I flee

O teach me Sweet Mother to follow His Will

To journey with courage up Calvery’s Hill

IV

O Mary my Mother and Mother of all

Be my guide and Protectress that I may not fall

And mayest Thou lead me to Heaven above

With Saints and Angels I’ll share in Thy Love

V

May a smile of thy mercy from heaven come down,

When my heart would leave thee and cleave to the ground,

And when this poor body returns to its sod,

May thy loving arms bear my soul to its God.

RED IS THE ROSE – Traditional

Uncategorized

We will be singing our new song which is a ballad. It was made popular by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. The melody is the same as a Scottish song about Loch Londonderry. The lyrics of this Irish ballad are very simple, telling a love story which leads to a unexpected sad ending. The lovers swear love and eternal devotion and then in the final verse we learn that they have to separate.

Question: What forces them to go deprecate ways?

Red is the Rose (Traditional)

Chorus

Red is the Rose by yonder garden grows

And fair is the lily of the valley

Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne

But my love is fairer than any.
T’was down by Killarney’s green woods that we strayed

And the moon and the stars they were shining

The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair

And she swore she’d be my love forever.
Chorus
It’s not for the parting that my sister pains

It’s not for the grief of my mother

It is all for the loss of my bonnie Irish lass

That my heart is breaking forever.
Chorus
Answer: Emigration forced them to separate.❤️
